Pope Benedict XVI waves at the start of an outdoor ... 

 

PORTO — Le pape Benoît XVI a bouclé vendredi son pèlerinage au Portugal par une dernière grande messe à Porto.

Comme la veille à Fatima, Benoît XVI a été accueilli à Porto par l'explosion de joie de dizaines de milliers de personnes, dont l'exubérance contrastait avec la réputation d'austérité de ce bastion catholique et conservateur du nord du pays.

 

 Selon le porte-parole du Vatican, le père Federico Lombardi, de 120 à 150.000 fidèles étaient présents vendredi sur l'Avenida dos Aliados, d'une capacité de 200.000 personnes.

 

Lors de la messe, célébrée dans une atmosphère de profond recueillement et de grande solennité, le pape, en chasuble rouge, a insisté sur l'importance pour les catholiques "d'aller à la rencontre des autres pour partager leur foi, sous peine de mort de la présence de l'Eglise dans le monde".

Devant plusieurs centaines de milliers de pèlerins venus prier avec lui à Fatima, le pape a manifesté son attachement à Marie et précisé les contours du prêtre de demain. Auparavant, il avait poursuivi à Lisbonne son dialogue avec la société et la culture.

 

Peut-être le pape, après avoir précisé le fond de sa pensée sur la crise pédophile s’est-il senti libéré, au Portugal, du poids nauséabond des incompréhensions ? Toujours est-il que, durant la première journée de ce voyage, son regard pétillait, ses gestes manifestaient écoute et chaleur. Face au Tage, dans le cadre grandiose de la place Terreiro de Paco, dans une liturgie aussi simple que belle, le dialogue entre un pape porteur de la Tradition vivante de l’Église et un peuple travaillé par les forces de la sécularisation pouvait commencer.

 

Le lendemain, arrivant au sanctuaire marial de Fatima, c’est un autre voyage dans le voyage qui a commencé, peut-être la véritable raison du déplacement du pape au Portugal.

 

Plus de 300 000 personnes étaient rassemblées mercredi sur l’immense esplanade pour accueillir Benoît XVI. Un peuple rural, marqué par la rudesse de la vie. Beaucoup de jeunes également. Ici aussi, dans ce sanctuaire qui voit passer plus de cinq millions de pèlerins chaque année, le pape s’est véritablement livré à la présence de Marie. À genoux devant la statue, dont la couronne abrite la balle qui a transpercé son prédécesseur, il l’a fixée des yeux, comme il fixait, le 2 mai, le suaire de Turin. Puis il est resté, debout, de longues minutes en méditation.

 

À l’autre extrémité de l’esplanade l’attendaient plus de 4000 prêtres, religieux et religieuses, soit la plupart des personnes consacrées du pays. Dans la magnifique, et très sobre, basilique moderne, dans laquelle il a pénétré, précédé de filles servantes d’autel, Benoît XVI a dessiné le visage du prêtre souhaité pour demain. Puis, en un acte inédit, il a consacré les prêtres au cœur immaculé de Marie, avec une belle prière réaliste, demandant notamment à la Vierge : "Que ta présence fasse refleurir le désert de nos solitudes et briller le soleil sur nos obscurités".

 

Le soir, une foule immense a bravé le froid et le vent pour prier le chapelet avec lui. L’occasion pour Benoît XVI de revenir sur une ligne directrice de son pontificat : "À notre époque, où la foi dans de vastes régions risque de s’éteindre comme une flamme qui n’est plus alimentée, la première de toutes les priorités est de rendre Dieu présent dans ce monde et d’ouvrir aux hommes l’accès à Dieu".

 

 Puis, des dizaines de milliers de pèlerins ont passé la nuit dans des campements de fortune, dans des parkings improvisés autour de Fatima. En dépit du froid, ils étaient près d’un demi-million jeudi matin, en ce 13 mai date anniversaire des apparitions de Marie aux petits bergers en 1917. Devant les milliers de bannières de paroisses et de mouvements, le pape a lancé : "Celui qui penserait que la mission prophétique de Fatima est achevée se tromperait. À la famille humaine prête à sacrifier ses liens les plus saints sur l’autel de l’égoïsme mesquin de la nation, de la race, de l’idéologie, du groupe, de l’individu, notre Mère bénie est venue du Ciel pour mettre dans le cœur de ceux qui se recommandent à Elle, l’amour de Dieu qui brûle dans le sien".

 

 Des propos proches de ceux qu’il tiendra, un peu plus tard, devant les évêques portugais : "Il faut d’authentiques témoins de Jésus Christ, surtout dans ces milieux humains où le silence de la foi est plus vaste et plus profond : les hommes politiques, les intellectuels, les professionnels de la communication qui professent et promeuvent une orientation culturelle unique, en méprisant la dimension religieuse et contemplative de la vie". Le diagnostic, sévère, est appuyé : "Le rappel courageux et intégral des principes est essentiel et indispensable".

 

 Identité et clarté comme conditions de l’indispensable dialogue : au Portugal, Benoît XVI vise bien au-delà du peuple qu’il visite.

Benoît XVI entame son pèlerinage à Fatima sous les vivats

FATIMA — Le pape Benoît XVI a entamé mercredi après-midi, sous les vivats d'une foule immense, son pèlerinage à Fatima, symbole du Portugal catholique, quelques heures après avoir mis en garde contre les conséquences "dramatiques" d'une perte des valeurs chrétiennes.

 

 L'hélicoptère de Benoît XVI a atterri à 17H15 à Fatima après avoir survolé à basse altitude le sanctuaire, acclamé par des dizaines de milliers de pèlerins agitant drapeaux et mouchoirs.

 

 Le pape s'est aussitôt rendu en papamobile jusqu'à la Chapelle des apparitions, érigée à l'endroit où la Vierge serait apparue le 13 mai 1917 à trois petits bergers.

 

Accueilli aux cris de "Viva o papa!", Benoît XVI s'est recueilli à la Chapelle des apparitions avant de prononcer une prière, à genoux devant la statue de la Vierge à qui il a offert une rose d'or, comme l'avait fait Paul VI, le 13 mai 1967.

 

Jean Paul II, convaincu que la Vierge de Fatima lui avait sauvé la vie lors de l'attentat commis contre lui le 13 mai 1981 à Rome, a offert au sanctuaire la balle qui l'avait grièvement blessé, aujourd'hui enchâssée dans la couronne de la statue.

 

Dans sa prière, Benoît XVI a évoqué ces événements : "c'est une profonde consolation pour nous de savoir que tu es couronnée, non seulement avec l'argent et l'or de nos joies et de nos espérances, mais aussi avec le projectile qui symbolise nos préoccupations et nos souffrances".

 

Selon la foi catholique, la Vierge aurait révélé trois "secrets", jugés prophétiques de l'Histoire du XXe siècle. Si les deux premiers "secrets" étaient connus depuis le début des années 40, le troisième n'a été rendu public qu'en mai 2000, à l'occasion de la visite de Jean Paul II, la hiérarchie catholique "révélant" alors qu'il prédisait l'attentat contre le pape polonais.

 

 Mardi matin, dans l'avion qui l'amenait à Lisbonne, Benoît XVI avait élargi "l'interprétation" de ce secret. Il avait estimé qu'"en plus de cette grande vision de la souffrance du pape", le message de Fatima annonçait les "souffrances de l'Eglise" parmi lesquelles le scandale créé par la révélation de multiples cas de pédophilie dans le clergé, aggravés par l'omerta de la hiérarchie.

 

Mercredi soir, célébrant les vêpres avec plusieurs milliers de membres du clergé portugais, le pape les a appelés à rester "fidèles" à leur "vocation et à s'aider réciproquement à rester debout."

 

" Réservez une attention particulière aux situations d'affaiblissement des idéaux sacerdotaux ou bien au fait de se consacrer à des activités qui ne s'accordent pas complètement avec ce qui est le propre d'un ministre de Jésus Christ", leur a-t-il conseillé lors de vêpres dans l'Eglise de la Très Sainte Trinité, l'une des plus grandes au monde avec 9.000 places assises.

 

La journée de Benoît XVI s'est conclue par une veillée aux flambeaux et une récitation du chapelet, devant une marée de cierges portés par des dizaines de milliers de personnes massées sur la vaste esplanade.

A l'ouest de Lisbonne, dans le quartier de Belém, cet ensemble, composé de l'église Santa Maria et du célèbre monastère des Hiéronymites, est un chef d'oeuvre de l'architecture manuéline.

 

Sur l'emplacement d'un ermitage fondé par Henri le Navigateur, le roi Manuel Ier entreprit en 1502, un peu après le retour de Vasco de Gama de son premier voyage en Inde, de bâtir un magnifique monastère destiné aux religieux de l'ordre des hiéronymites, ordre des ermites de Saint-Jérôme.
