" La paix est un don que Dieu confie à la responsabilité humaine", affirme Benoît XVI qui lance un appel à la paix à Jérusalem.

Le pape a exprimé deux fois sa préoccupation pour la paix en Terre Sainte, dans son homélie de la messe des Rameaux qui rappelle l'entrée du Christ à Jérusalem, et dans un appel à l'Angélus.

" Notre pensée et notre cœur se dirigent maintenant de façon particulière vers Jérusalem où le mystère pascal s'est accompli, a dit le pape avant la prière de l'angélus. Je suis profondément affligé par les récents heurts et les tensions qui ont eu lieu une nouvelle fois dans cette Ville qui est la patrie spirituelle des chrétiens, des juifs et des musulmans, prophétie et promesse de cette réconciliation universelle que Dieu désire pour toute la famille humaine".

" La paix est un don que Dieu confie à la responsabilité humaine, afin qu'elle la cultive par le dialogue et le respect des droits de tous, la réconciliation et le pardon. Prions donc pour que les responsables du sort de Jérusalem prennent avec courage le chemin de la paix et le suivent avec persévérance !", a demandé le pape.

Dans son homélie de la messe, sous le soleil de la place Saint-Pierre, le pape avait évoqué son pèlerinage de l'an dernier en Terre Sainte, et il en a souligné "trois significations".
Tout d'abord que "la foi en Jésus n'est pas une invention légendaire". Et ensuite que le pèlerinage en Terre Sainte est un pèlerinage "en messager de paix, en priant pour la paix, en invitant tout le monde à faire en ce lieu qui porte dans son nom le mot 'paix' tout ce qui est possible pour qu'il devienne véritablement un lieu de paix".

Il a rappelé aussi un troisième aspect touchant la vocation des chrétiens de Terrre Sainte à promouvoir la paix : "Ce pèlerinage est en même temps un encouragement pour les chrétiens à rester dans le pays de leurs origines et à s'y engager intensément en faveur de la paix".

Plusieurs dizaines de Palestiniens affrontent la police israélienne à coup de pierres, mardi à Jérusalem-Est, à l'occasion du "jour de colère" proclamé par le Hamas pour protester contre la consécration d'une synagogue de la vieille ville.
REUTERS : De nouveaux heurts éclatent à Jérusalem

La police israélienne avait été déployée en masse pour faire face à tout débordement à Jérusalem-est, où les tensions politico-religieuses sont vives depuis des semaines. Elle a maintenu l'interdiction d'accès à l'esplanade des Mosquées de Jérusalem, troisième lieu saint de l'islam, aux fidèles musulmans âgés de moins de 50 ans, ainsi qu'à tous les visiteurs non musulmans.

L'inauguration lundi de la synagogue historique de la Hourva a été perçue comme une provocation par les Palestiniens. Le mouvement islamiste palestinien Hamas, au pouvoir à Gaza mais qui est très affaibli en Cisjordanie, a appelé à "une journée de la colère" mardi pour dénoncer cette inauguration. Elle "sera le prélude à la violence, à l'extrémisme et au fanatisme religieux, et cela ne se limite pas aux extrémistes juifs mais inclut des membres du gouvernement israélien", a accusé Hatem Abdel Qader, le responsable du dossier de Jérusalem au sein du Fatah, le mouvement du président Mahmoud Abbas.

Comment décririez-vous les sentiments de la population à Jérusalem, et particulièrement des chrétiens en Terre sainte ?

: C'est une ville particulière, une belle ville, une ville spectaculaire sur laquelle le Seigneur lui-même a pleuré. Et nous continuons à pleurer. Ce n'est pas facile. Jérusalem réunit tous les croyants - juifs, musulmans, chrétiens - mais en même temps, Jérusalem divise tous les croyants, jusqu'à la mort. Tout le monde veut faire de Jérusalem sa capitale, et pour moi, Jérusalem doit être la mère des Eglises, la mère de tous les croyants, et pas d'un seul peuple.

D'un côté, on ne peut que se réjouir de voir tous ces gens qui viennent visiter les Lieux saints ; et de l'autre, il est douloureux de voir l'Eglise locale, les chrétiens locaux qui ne peuvent même pas s'y rendre. Un prêtre d'une paroisse de Bethléem ne peut pas emmener ses fidèles en pèlerinage dans les Lieux saints. Même situation à Ramallah, et en Jordanie, et dans d'autres paroisses ; il ne leur est pas facile de se déplacer étant donné la multiplicité des contrôles et le mur qui les sépare.
